A Masdar-led consortium has entered to an agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement for the development of the Sultanate of Oman’s first utility-scale solar and battery storage project.

The consortium, composed of Masdar, Al Khadra Partners, Korea Midland Power Co. Ltd, and OQ Alternative Energy, will develop the Ibri III Solar Independent Power Project. This will feature a 500-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic plant with a 100-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).

The scope of the project includes design, construction, ownership, financing, operation and maintenance of the plant and storage system.

Once operational, Ibri III will produce enough electricity to power around 33,000 homes, whilst avoiding approximately 505,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. It is also expected to contribute up to an additional four percent of renewable energy in the total electricity generation mix.

Oman’s 2040 vision includes generating 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.
