Odisha, India-headquartered solar PV company Group Surya has announced plans to establish a solar cell and module manufacturing plant in the state of Bihar with a 1.2 GW annual installed capacity, based on the current industry workhorse TOPCon solar technology.  

The proposed project is planned to be built in the Sasaram region of Rohtas district for an estimated investment of INR 10 billion ($116.42 million). The company has committed to the project under a recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the state government. 

Solar cells and modules produced by Group Surya’s Sasaram fab will be delivered both within as well as outside India once the factory is commissioned in phases.   

Surya International, a group company of Group Surya that’s also present in the EPC space, reportedly announced a 500 MW solar panel manufacturing factory in Odisha recently worth INR 800 million ($9.8 million). According to Mercom India Research, it will also expand the capacity of its existing 100 MW solar module manufacturing plant to 500 MW. The group also plans to go the initial public offering (IPO) way.  

Group Surya is one among the several big and small companies that have recently announced plans for solar PV manufacturing in India. Recently, Pennar Industries and Zetwerk Manufacturing announced a solar manufacturing collaboration through a JV.
