The European Commission has today (Wednesday) launched its first call for clean hydrogen suppliers on its new H2 matchmaking platform, the so-called “Hydrogen Mechanism”.
Launched in July as part of the European Hydrogen Bank, the Hydrogen Mechanism will match suppliers of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives to offtakers.
If successful, the Mechanism could bolster the number of clean H2 offtake agreements signed in Europe, and therefore increase the number of final investment decisions (FIDs).
Today’s call for interest will last until 2 January 2026, with producers invited to submit supply offers to the programme.
This forms the first step of an effort to determine the combined volume of supply and demand in the bloc.
The results of the call, including anonymised information sheets about the supply offers, will be published on 19 January.
Due to run until 2029, Hydrogen Mechanism forms the vanguard of a bigger supply aggregation programme, known as the Energy & Raw Materials Platform, which is a successor to the AggregateEU mechanism for joint purchasing fossil gas.
Significantly, the EU will allow for both renewable and low-carbon H2 to be registered on the platform, as well as molecules that meet its definition of a “renewable fuel of non-biological origin” (RFNBO).
In addition to collating volumes for both supply and demand, and acting as a matchmaker between different firms, the platform will also include information about financial products for hydrogen projects with partner institutions.
The EC expects the new mechanism to help project developers partner up with firms in order to apply for EHB auctions, which require early-stage offtake agreements to be in place.
The bloc also anticipates that the platform could be used to inform decisions around hydrogen pipeline and storage infrastructure.
“Today’s call marks a new chapter in the EU’s support to the European industry and its competitive decarbonisation through renewable and low-carbon hydrogen,” said the EU’s commissioner for energy and housing, Dan Jørgensen.
“By connecting buyers and sellers, this hydrogen mechanism will help us create a cleaner and competitive future for our energy and our economy.”
