Canadian Solar Inc. has announced that e-STORAGE, a business unit of its majority-owned subsidiary CSI Solar Co., Ltd., will supply a large-scale battery energy storage system to Vena Energy for the Tailem Bend 3 project in South Australia. The project will involve the delivery of a 204 MW / 408 MWh AC battery energy storage system, marking another important step in expanding energy storage capacity in the region.
e-STORAGE will work closely with Vena Energy and balance-of-plant partner Consolidated Power Projects Australia Pty Ltd to deliver the Tailem Bend 3 battery energy storage system as a full turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction solution. The system will use close to 100 SolBank 3.0 battery containers and is designed to provide reliable, utility-scale energy storage. Located in Tailem Bend, South Australia, the project is currently under construction and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2027.
In addition to system delivery, e-STORAGE will also be responsible for ongoing maintenance under an initial five-year long-term service agreement. Once operational, the Tailem Bend 3 project is expected to play a key role in improving grid stability in South Australia. It will support the integration of renewable energy into the power system, building on Vena Energy’s existing renewable and storage developments in the region and helping to manage the variability associated with wind and solar generation.
According to Vena Energy, the Tailem Bend 3 battery energy storage system will be its third energy storage project in Australia, reflecting the company’s continued focus on expanding grid-supporting storage solutions. The addition of 408 MWh of storage capacity represents a significant milestone in Vena Energy’s growth strategy and will further strengthen South Australia’s leadership in renewable energy adoption. The project also aligns with the company’s broader commitment to developing large-scale renewable energy and storage assets that contribute to Australia’s clean energy transition.
For e-STORAGE, the Tailem Bend 3 project represents its fourth battery energy storage system deployment in Australia. With this project included, the company’s total footprint in the country will reach approximately 2 GWh across projects that have been completed or are currently under construction. The company views the project as an important opportunity to support South Australia’s energy transition by delivering a reliable storage solution that enhances renewable energy integration and supports long-term grid resilience.
