A methanol-hydrogen electric multi-purpose riverboat, Yuanchun 001, was successfully launched at Hangzhou Qianhang Shipbuilding on Friday (12 September), according to Geely Holding Group.

The Yuanchun 001 uses Geely’s independently developed methanol-hydrogen hybrid electric drive system, enabling it to achieve carbon net-zero emission throughout its lifecycle with green methanol fuel

The 64 TEU methanol-hydrogen electric vessel is a 1,500-tonne dual-purpose vessel integrating methanol propulsion with intelligent control.

The vessel is optimised for reducing lifecycle costs and energy consumption with 42% lower energy consumption than similar diesel vessels.

Its core configuration includes two 280-kW methanol generators and two 258-kWh lithium-ion battery packs (totaling 516 kWh) .

Through DC networking technology and a multi-operating-mode design, the vessel achieves efficient synergy between methanol clean energy and lithium-ion battery storage, providing a replicable demonstration solution for greener and more intelligent shipping.

The vessel can flexibly operate in multiple modes including, hybrid, generators only, pure electric, or shore charging.
